ASTRE unit

ASTRE is a joint research unit created in 2017 by two research agencies: Cirad and INRAE.

The unit aims to improve animal and public health and food security in the South, in particular within the context of global change and transitions of socio-ecosystems.

    The unit’s scientific project is to improve animal and public health and food security in the South and the North, and to develop an integrative approach to health: inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary based on animals, ecosystems and territories, as part of the One Health and EcoHealth approaches.

  • Staff and geographical locations

    Staff and geographical locations
    ASTRE comprises around 100 permanent staff, two-thirds of whom are scientists (researchers and engineers) and one-third technicians, collaborators and supervisors. It also hosts about 30 PhD and post-doctoral students. The skills brought together in the unit cover a broad spectrum of disciplines such as microbiology, epidemiology, ecology, entomology, modelling and the human and social sciences.

    The unit enjoys an international presence with work carried out on four continents (Africa and Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, Caribbean and Europe) and more than a dozen staff assigned to Southern partners.

    The unit conducts its research activities in partnership with various scientific communities, public institutions and private companies located in the South, in Europe and in France itself.

    Infrastructure & technical platforms
    In order to respond to ever-increasing scientific and technical research challenges, the unit has acquired high-performance infrastructure and innovative tools in its various geographical locations. For its research on infectious diseases, the unit has secure facilities in Montpellier and Guadeloupe, and a shared facility in Reunion.

  • MUSC audiovisual platform

    MUSC audiovisual platform for the FABA project@ Sylvain Dépigny, CIRAD
    Created in 2014 and hosted by the joint CIRAD/FVI platform, “Capacity Building for Livestock Management and Animal Health in the Global South”, the MUSC audiovisual platform (MUltimedia for SCience) aims to enable agents of ASTRE and other CIRAD units, as well as their partners, to use the audiovisual tool as a means of promotion and communication.
